NEWCASTLE: In the home region of rugby World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson, Alan Shearer proved he too has an eye for goal as he notched up 100 goals under manager Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle.

Tyneside's other sporting superstar got on the scoresheet twice inside the last 13 minutes on Saturday to break Manchester City in a 3-0 win that made the Magpies look a different side from the one thrashed at Chelsea.

Shola Ameobi's 57th-minute opener put Newcastle on their way, but worryingly for Kevin Keegan, the home side never needed to really hit top form to beat his side.

Neither goalkeeper had a save to make in the first half, but the stalemate ended with 57 minutes gone.

Aaron Hughes fed the ball to Laurent Robert and the French winger turned away from Sun Jihai and sent a deep cross to the far post where Steve McManaman blocked Ameobi's initial header but could not prevent the striker from poking the rebound past Seaman and into the net.

Another Frenchman, Olivier Bernard, then produced the perfect ball for Shearer to direct an unstoppable header past Seaman from point-blank range.

Ameobi set up Shearer's second with a cushioned header before the veteran scrambled the ball home. – AFP
