Aussie Dawes strolls to eight-shot win in Taipei

TAIPEI: Australian Jason Dawes won the Acer Taiwan Open yesterday by a comfortable eight strokes over India’s Jeev Milkha Singh for his maiden Asian PGA Tour triumph.

The 30-year-old Dawes carded a final round one-over 73 at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club to finish on four-under 284 and was the only player to break par in the tournament, which was marred by strong winds throughout the week.

His triumph was worth US$50,000 and secured his place in the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia in Bangkok next month.

Jeev Milkha, the first round leader, shot the day’s best round of 70 to finish second on 292. Taiwan’s Lin Wen-tang was a further three strokes back in third place after a closing 74 while South African Hendrik Buhrmann finished fourth after a 72.

The week’s tournament drawcard, Justin Rose of England, settled for tied 14th position – a final round 77 saw him post a four-day total of 301, some 17 strokes behind the champion.

Taiwanese amateur Lo Shih-kai, who made history on Saturday by becoming the youngest player to make the cut on the Asian PGA Tour at the age of 14, was disqualified after he incorrectly signed a wrong score in his final round.
