HAMBURG: SV Hamburg legend Uwe Seeler has hit out at his former club for their treatment of Kurt Jara who was sacked as coach on Wednesday after being told he would be in charge for yesterday's home match with Schalke 04.

Klaus Toppmoller is now in the hot-seat at the AOL-Arena but the way popular Austrian Jara was dismissed has left a sour taste in Seeler's mouth

“You just can not do that to a coach,” said a shocked Seeler to Bild Saturday. “You can not give someone a vote of confidence and then go back on it. That is not on.”

“Kurt did not deserve that in the slightest.”

Seeler, a World Cup runner-up with Germany in 1966, was joined in his disapproval by the Hamburg players.

“It is degrading for Jara,” exclaimed defender Milan Fukal.

Eintracht Frankfurt manager Willi Reimann was also less than impressed by Toppmoller's whirlwind appointment.

“It is premeditated murder,” declared Reimann.

Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Toppmoller showed sympathy for his predecessor but pointed out that it was part and parcel of football.

“That is the nature of the business,” Toppmoller told German magazine Kicker. “No-one at Leverkusen asked me when I would like to go.” – AFP
