PETALING JAYA: The Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM) will again bank on national number one Khoo Chin Bee (pic) to win medals in the Vietnam SEA Games in December.
In the last SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Chin Bee contributed three of the seven medals (one silver and six bronzes) won by the team.
Chin Bee helped the women's team bag the silver medal and was won two bronze in the singles and the mixed doubles partnering V. Selvam.
The LTAM vice-president, Datuk Malik Mohd Salleh, said yesterday: “Our target for the Vietnam Games is to win one silver and two bronze medal.
“We are banking on Chin Bee to win the silver medal. The two bronze medals should come from the men.”
Chin Bee looks up to the task as she has been performing well recently. She won the ITF Heineken women’s circuit II singles and doubles title in Lagos in August.
She also reached the singles semi-finals of the US$10,000 Indian Oil Servo ITF Futures in Bangalore last month.
“It will be difficult to emulate our success in KL two years ago but we will try our best. Our biggest hurdle to win medals will come from Thailand and Indonesia,” said Malik.
A total of seven gold medals are at stake in the Games.
Malaysia will only be represented by Chin Bee in the women's competition.
The LTAM have yet to finalise the men's squad. Four players are vying for three places in the team. They are Si Yew Ming, Adam Jaya, Danio Yahya and Mohd Nor Nordin.
“We will make our final selection in the first week of November,” said Malik.
“Yew Meng and Danio are currently aboard. Yew Meng left for Sri Lanka on Monday to take part in satellite events while Danio is training in Barcelona.
“Adam and Mohd Nor together with Chin Bee are training in KL with national coach R. Ramachandran.”
