PORTSMOUTH: Gerard Houllier faces a fresh crisis of confidence in his reign as Liverpool manager after a third successive defeat left the Reds a huge 12 points off the pace being set by Premiership leaders Arsenal.
A 1-0 reverse at the hands of top flight newcomers Portsmouth here on Saturday prompted a flurry of angry phone calls from Liverpool fans to radio talk shows, and Houllier was clearly feeling the strain as he tried to explain away the worst run of league defeats since he took over at Anfield.
