Hickmott strikes again to claim second straight title

SUBANG: Australian Luke Hickmott saved his best for the last few holes of the Palm Course yesterday to beat compatriot James Nitties by two strokes in the HLA Saujana Amateur Open golf championship here yesterday.

It was his second consecutive title in Malaysia following the Malaysia Amateur Open in Johor Baru last week.

With the rest of the field almost out of contention on the final day, the battle between the top two amateur golfers got off to an exciting start.

Nitties struck a birdie in the first and third hole and led Hickmott by two strokes at the turn. But by the 14th hole, Hickmott was a stroke behind Nitties.

At the 16th, Hickmott sunk a birdie to take the lead while Nitties was troubled with bogeys on the 15th and 16th.

A jubilant Hickmott, who will turn professional next year, said: “I am in good form here. My experiences playing in many competitive tournaments this year have certainly helped me to perform well.”
