KUANTAN: Wazi Abdul Hamid took his second chequered flag of the season in the experts' class of the Petronas Sprinta AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championships in Bandar Indera Mahkota here yesterday.
But the win did not take him to the top of the championship standings after seven rounds. Shahrun Nizam remained as the leader with a second-place finish in the penultimate round of the championships.
Shell KF Yamaha MIG's Shahrun now has 125 points – 15 points more than Wazi. Shahrun needs to finish among the top six in the final round in Batu Kawan on Oct 19 to claim the title.
“I kept my cool to finish the race in second place. I saw no reason to go all out and risk my position as leader in the standings,” said Shahrun.
On his chances to pip his teammate to the title, Wazi said: “It looks like it will go down the wire.
“The worse part is coming up against your teammate. In the end, one of us has to cope with the feeling of dejection.”
The battle for the novices' title was held back for 30 minutes because of bad weather conditions. It got off in the wet but was called off after three laps.
