KUALA LUMPUR: Former international Suhaimi Ibrahim could find himself in hot soup after signing up for hosts Malacca in the Razak Cup hockey tournament starting tomorrow at the Bukit Serendit Stadium.
Suhaimi, who is from Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan, did not get a release letter from the Negri Hockey Assoaciation (NHA) to play for Malacca.
Negri HA secretary Anthony Dass said that Suhaimi could be asking for trouble.
“Suhaimi played in the Negri league for Yayasan (Negri Sembilan) last year. He also represented Negri in the Razak Cup last year.
“I don't why he is not interested in playing for Negri this year. However, he must get a release letter from us.
“Negri HA deputy president Datuk Abdullah (Sani) has told me not to give Suhaimi the release to play for Malacca,'' said Anthony, who will bring the matter up in the managers' meeting today.
Under the tournament rules, a players must turn out for the state in which he is working or in whose league he has been playing.
With Suhaimi out, Negri do not have any national players in their squad.
They will be relying on three former internationals – goalkeeper M. Nadarajan, defender Kerpal Singh and forwrad Syayrim Uda Karim – to help them finish in a good position.
Negri are drawn in Group B with National Juniors, Selangor, Terengganu, Johor and Kedah. Defending champions Kuala Lumpur are in Group A with Armed Forces, Malacca, Pahang, Perak, Sabah.
