US open campaign on winning note, Katia hits twice for Brazil

NEW YORK: The United States showed they are in no mood to relinquish their status as women’s world champions as they overcame Sweden 3-1 in their first match of the 2003 World Cup in Washington on Sunday.

However, the victory was tinged with some sadness when Brandi Chastain, the player who scored the winning penalty kick in their 1999 triumph, suffered a broken foot during the Group A match and is battling to recover for the rest of the tournament.
