A record 588 bowlers at opening of world championships

PETALING JAYA: The 15th World Bowling Championships were officially opened by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein in a short but glittering ceremony at the Pyramid Mega Lanes yesterday evening.

The venue saw the largest-ever gathering of 588 bowlers from 65 countries.

Argentina were the first foreign contingent to march into the venue, accompanied by the sound of rebana ubi drums.

The loudest cheers from the gallery were reserved for the Malaysian contingent, who came out last. The Malaysian women were dressed in baju kebayas while the men wore batik shirts – in the lucky green colour of the national team.

The event here will be the last time the men's and women's competitions will be held simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Stephen Steven Hontiveros of the Philipines was elected as the new FIQ president yesterday. He replaces Malaysia's Datuk Dr P.S. Nathan.
