PENANG: One new man devastated Penang. They are not going to let another one do the same.
After a 4-2 defeat by Sabah, which saw new striker Keith Gumbs score a hat-trick, Penang will be out to shackle defending champion Selangor's newly acquired Darko Novavic at the State Stadium in Batu Kawan in their Group C Malaysia Cup clash tonight.
Although Penang know absolutely nothing about Novavic, his two goals against Selangor MPPJ on Wednesday is enough to put Penang on alert.
Coach Irfan Bakti said he would ensure Novavic is closely shadowed.
“He has to be good to make an immediate impression like that. And after the opening defeat by Sabah, we have to be extra cautious.”
Against Sabah, Penang twice took the lead only to let Sabah come back. Then, they caved in.
Penang have recent history on their side, though. They beat the Red Giants in their last two meetings.
“We beat Selangor twice this season. But we will be foolish if we are to fall back on such records,” Irfan said.
“It is always a different ball game in the Malaysia Cup and, with Novavic around, Selangor are more dangerous.
Irfan was giving thanks for the draw between MPPJ and Selangor. With Sabah the outright leaders on three points, the Panther are now just a point adrift of the other two and a win tonight will put them back in contention.
But, Penang will have to do without skipper Chee Wan Hoe, who is out with a knee injury suffered in a recent friendly against Kedah.
