LONDON: The final humiliation for Gareth Southgate’s England career was delivered on Monday when the Middlesbrough captain was overlooked by Sven-Goran Eriksson, who instead chose Matthew Upson to replace the injured Owen Hargreaves.
The veteran defender would appear to have earned the last of his 55 caps after he was originally left out of the squad in favour of Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate and John Terry who were unfit for England’s game against Slovakia at the end of last season.
