KOTA KINABALU: Security around the Likas Stadium here will be enhanced to ensure smooth running of the Malaysia Cup campaign starting tomorrow, especially during matches involving the State.

State Malaysia Cup Organising and Security Committee chairman Alfred Lojitan said this was to avoid the recurrence of untoward incidents.

The additional security included more policemen and Federal Reserve Unit personnel placed at strategic points in the stadium, including the referees' rooms, he said after chairing a meeting of the committee here yesterday.

On May 27, the Sabah Football Association was fined RM25,000 following hooliganism at the stadium during an FA Cup semi-final match between Sabah and Negri Sembilan on May 17.

The match had to be stopped after fans, who were not satisfied with the referee's call disallowing a goal by the home side, invaded the pitch. – Bernama
