LONDON: Sunderland moved to within one loss of the all-time English record for successive league defeats when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Millwall in the First Division on Saturday.
Noel Whelans seventh-minute goal condemned Sunderland to their 17th league loss in a row, one short of the record of 18 set by Darwen in the old English First Division in the 1898-99 season.
