Sunderland close to a record

LONDON: Sunderland moved to within one loss of the all-time English record for successive league defeats when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Millwall in the First Division on Saturday.

Noel Whelan’s seventh-minute goal condemned Sunderland to their 17th league loss in a row, one short of the record of 18 set by Darwen in the old English First Division in the 1898-99 season.

Reading thrashed Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

Relegated West Ham United were held 0-0 at Upton Park by Sheffield United, last season’s losing playoff finalists.

West Bromwich Albion, who like Sunderland and West Ham were relegated from the Premier League last season, recovered in style from their shock 4-1 opening day defeat by Walsall.

They crushed Burnley 4-1 at the Hawthorns. – Reuters
