Argentina edge archrivals Brazil to lift Pan American Games gold medal

SANTO DOMINGO (Dominican Republic): Striker Maximiliano Lopez scored on the stroke of halftime to help give Argentina win the men's soccer gold medal at the Pan American Games after beating archrivals Brazil 1-0.

Friday's match, a typically bruising and bad-tempered affair between the South Americans, ended in controversy when Brazil thought a late header had crossed the line. But the referee waved away their appeals, allowing Pablo Barzola's amazing goal-line clearance to stand.
