JOHOR BARU: Royal Malay Regiment (RMR) enhanced their quarter-final hopes in the Malaysian Hockey League with a 10-1 whitewash of Johor Baru City Council (JBCC) at the JBCC Hockey Stadium here yesterday.
The big defeat virtually ended JBCC's hopes of making the last eight.
For the visitors, the big win was what they were after in their battle with Srii Aroma, JBCC and Pahang Sports council for a place in the quarter-finals.
Forward Zulhairi Ariffin, though grossly overweight, was in top form as he hammered in four goals JBCC keeper Ahmad Bazli Razali including a hattrick in a seven-minute spell which began in the 17th minute.
His first came off a penalty corner when he picked up a rebound off the keeper. His next two in the 22nd and 23rd minutes were well executed field goals much to the delight of the fans. His fourth goal was another field attempt in the 60th minute.
Supri Mat Junoh opened the floodgates as early as the seventh minute when his flick from a penalty corner rolled over Ahmad Bazli's pads as the keeper threw himself on the ground in a bid to stop Supri's attempt.
Manveer Singh briefly raised JBCC's hopes when he connected Muhd Amerullah Abdul Aziz's cross from the right to send RMR keeper Ku Baharuddin wrong footed. But that was all the homesters could show as RMR took firm control after that.
Sulaiman Bujang also helped himself to a brace with field goals in the 35th and 69th minutes. RMR's skipper, Hong Kong international Arif Ali also got his name on the scoresheet twice with strikes in the 31st and 46th minutes.
JBCC face Customs at the same venue tomorrow.
