SEOUL: A powerful strike from Sidney Govou gave Olympique Lyon a 1-0 win over K-League title holders Seongnam Ilhwa on Saturday to secure the French champions a place in the final of the Peace Cup pre-season tournament.
The young striker scored early in the first half after the Seongnam goalkeeper could only partially parry his snap shot from just outside the area.
The South Korean side had a series of chances, but to the disappointment of the majority of the crowd in Chonju they were guilty of poor finishing.
Victory puts the French club on top of Group A and books them a place in tomorrow’s final in the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Their opponents will be decided after yesterday’s final games in Group B where current leaders Nacional of Uruguay played 1860 Munich and PSV Eindhoven met Los Angeles Galaxy.
In the other match in Group A on Saturday, Besiktas of Turkey drew 2-2 with South Africa’s Kaiser Chiefs in Pusan. – Reuters
