KUALA LUMPUR: The Johor International Marathon will be making a return after a 10-year absence.

The marathon, last held in 1993, will be held at the Dataran Bandaraya in Johor Baru on Sept 28.

The Johor Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) are organising the marathon with the help of the Johor Tourism Action Council, Tourism Malaysia, Johor Baru City Council and Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU).

Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) president Datuk Khalid Yunus praised the JAAA for reviving the marathon after a lapse of 10 years.

“We lack international marathons and with Johor having the international marathon in September, we will be able to scout for talented long distance runners.

“By organising more international marathons, we can see more participation of our athletes and also the participation of foreign runners,” said Khalid.

The Kuala Lumpur International Marathon, the premier marathon event in Malaysia, is held in April.

The Johor International Marathon will be divided into 14 categories based on age group and distance.

The categories are marathon (men and women), marathon (men’s junior veteran and senior veteran), marathon (women’s veteran), 10km run (men and women), 10km run (men’s junior veteran), 7km (men’s senior veteran, women’s veteran, boys and girls).

The minimum age for both local and foreign participants is 13 years.

The winner in the men’s Open category will receive RM10,000 while the women’s Open champion stands to bag RM5,000.

The closing date for registration is Sept 14 and online registration is at www. johorathletics.comFor more details, call the secretariat at Tel: 07-2277273/045/8045) or fax to 07-2279466.
