PETALING JAYA: Malaysia are leading in the overall standings of the third Asian Lawn Bowls Championships with three gold and a silver medal after four events at the National Lawn Bowls Centre in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
Malaysia won the gold medals in the men's and women's triples and in the men's pairs. The women's pairs were the silver medallists behind the Thais.
All the winners of the four events will represent Asia in a competition against Europe at the same venue on July 14.
In the men's triples, Zuraidi Puteh, Azizan Saidon and Syed Mohamed Syed Akil emerged tops, winning five of a six-round competition. They wrapped up the final day with wins over Singapore (24-15) and the Philippines (24-10). Their only defeat was by Hong Kong (12-21) on Monday.
The women's team of Saedah Abdul Rahim, Nazrah Ngahat and Haslah Hassan finished their campaign in style, winning all six rounds.
They defeated Singapore (29-5) and the Philippines (21-10) in the last two rounds yesterday.
Manchester Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Safuan Said and Jozaini Johari bagged the pairs' gold medal, winning five of the six rounds. They beat Singapore (27-14) and the Philippines (17-13) yesterday.
Siti Zalina Ahmad and Norhashimah Ismail bounced back fro an opening round defeat by Thailand's Vivathana Ipipanipong and Rosrin Sornmani (13-26) to beat Indonesia (20-17), Brunei (29-8), Hong Kong (25-13), Singapore (27-8) and the Philippines (20-18).
The singles and fours competitions will begin today.
