KUALA LUMPUR: The third Asian Lawn Bowls Championships, which begin today at the National Lawn Bowls Centre in Bukit Kiara here, will also serve as selection trials for the national Under-25 singles players for the World Indoor Bowls Council (WIBC) meet in Jersey.
Malaysia will be represented by three men and three women in the Under-25 singles competitions and the best finishers will make the trip to Jersey in October.
The men's contenders are Fairul Izwan Muin, Mohamed Hawari Mat Shoib and Mohamed Azri Zainal Abidin. The women are Sarimah Abu Bakar, Erda Firdayu Saroji and Sariyana Sahri (women).
Malaysia are expected to dominate the Asian championships again. At the last meet in the Philippines, Malaysia bagged 10 out of the 11 titles.
The women's team won all the four events singles, pairs, triples and the fours. The men only failed to bag the singles. Malaysia also won the men's and women's team events and the overall title.
Manchester Commonwealth Games gold medallist Siti Zalina Ahmad will spearhead Malaysia's challenge in the women's singles and pairs event.
The other teams in the competitions are Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei and Indonesia. Malaysia will open their campaign in the pairs and triples events in both the men's and women's categories today.
Safuan Said, a bronze medallist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, will partner Jozaini Johari in the men's pairs' event while the women's pair comprise Siti and Nor Hashimah Ismail.
The men's triples team comprise Zuraidi Puteh, Azizan Saidon and Syed Mohamed Syed Akil. The women's trio are Saedah Abdul Rahim, Nazura Ngahat and Haslah Hassan.
