SANTA CLARA (California): Michael Phelps of the United States set a world record of 1:57.94 in the 200m individual medley here on Sunday at the Santa Clara Invitational swim meet.
The 17-year-old from Baltimore erased the old mark of 1:58.16 set by Finland’s Jani Sievinen on Sept 11, 1994 at the World Championships in Rome.
