Duo pull out of junior squad

KUALA LUMPUR: Two players have pulled out of the national junior hockey training squad, citing studies.

The duo are Ahmad Annuar Sham from Malacca and Penang's Anwar Ali. A third player Baljit Singh from Johor has been left out as he is nursing a leg injury.

Juniors coach Sarjit Singh said both the players had wanted some time out to sort out their study problems.

“We have agreed with the request and have asked them to write in to us. They are both good players and we will allow them the time they need.

“Baljit, meanwhile, is undergoing treatment and cannot train for the moment. We will check on his progress but for this phase, he will not be able to train with us,'' said Sarjit.

Malacca's Nor Ikram Sulaiman has been recalled to the training squad while another Johor player Nor Affendy has been called up to replace Baljit.

Anwar is studying at Uniten in Bangi while Ahmaed Annuar is attending a private college in Malacca.

Two other players from UiTM, Ikmal Abdul Jabar and Wan Mohamed Azrizal, can only attend training in the afternoon as they have classes in the morning.

“We have also agreed to their request as well. This phase of training is basically to assess the players and as such we will be flexible,” he said.

The juniors are involved in a three match series with the senior team at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil. The first match on Wednesday ended in a 2-1 win for the seniors.

Yesterday, the teams played the second match and it ended in a 3-3 draw.

The senior team took a 2-0 lead but failed to secure a win as the juniors fought back for a draw. The scorers for the senior team were Nor Azlan Rahim, S. Kuhan and Ikmal Abdul Jabar while the juniors got their goals from Azlan Misron (two) and Mohamed Fakhrulradzi. The third match between the two teams will be held today at the same venue.
