IPOH: Perak have to thank their defence, marshalled by Brazilian centreback Carlos Moreira, for keeping Terengganu at bay in their 1-0 victory at the Perak Stadium on Saturday night.

The Perak defenders were kept busy by the Terengganu onslaught, spearheaded by the towering Ghanaian Charles Ikhogo, especially in the second half.

But the backline, which included Chan Kok Heng and Rushanisham Idrus on the flanks and Faizal Zainal in a central position, repelled the raids with quick and precise clearances. Goalkeeper Hamsani Ahmad was also in good form.

Said Moreira: “I am glad that I was able to contribute to Perak’s victory. The other defenders also did well to prevent our opponents from making any headway.”

For Terengganu, it was not only a sorry state of misses. In fact they could have suffered a bigger margin of defeat but for the bluntness in finishing by Perak strikers Indra Putra Mahayuddin and V. Saravanan.

Said Perak’s assistant coach Zakaria Mohamed: “We also had a tale of missed chances. But we are glad we managed to get full points. We would have been in deep trouble if our defence had not held out well.

“Moreira, who is under threat of losing his place in the team, has been improving with every game.”

Perak hung on to a 25th minute goal by Faizal for full points.
