PETALING JAYA: Defender Mohd Madzli Ikmar will answer a national hockey call-up even though he is still recuperating from a fractured right wrist.
The 24-year-old Madzli is among the 26 players called up for training to prepare for the Champions Challenge, which will be played in South Africa from July 19-27. Centralised training begins at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Monday.
Madzli, who last donned national colours in the Busan Asain Games last October, said: I am surprised to get the call up. I have not recovered fully from the injury and I still can't hold the hockey stick.
I will report to camp. My services are needed and I am eager to don national colours again.
Madzli underwent two surgeries for the injury, which he suffered last November. The first was in last December and the second in April.
Tenaga Nasional have also included Madzli in their team for the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL).
Madzli, who made his international debut in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games and has 120 caps to his credit, said: It has been eight months since I last played a match.
I will go for medical check-up on June 30 at the Pantai Medical Centre and I hope to get the green light from doctors to start playing hockey again.
I will only do physically training when I check in for national training on Monday. I hope I can recover in time to pllay for the country again in the Champions Challenge by next month.
