PASIR GUDANG: Mazlan Khamis continued to reap success on the 3.86km Johor Circuit, powering his way to the chequered flag in the experts’ final in the third round of the Petronas Sprinta-AAM-Malaysian Cub Prix Championships here yesterday.
The 25-year-old Mazlan, astride a Yamaha and racing for Shell Winston Maju, won the seven-lap race in 13:17.248. Badrul Motorsports’ M. Meganathan, riding a Suzuki, finished second in 13:24.302 followed by Mazlan’s teammate Mohd Faisal Yahya in 13:24.703.
The 25 points Mazlan earned for his victory put him on top of the championships’ standings with 51 points – one point ahead of previous leader Shahrun Nizam Tamin, who finished sixth yesterday.
Mazlan made full use of his experience on the circuit. Starting from pole position, Mazlan shot into the lead and never looked back.
The Johor Circuit is a happy hunting ground for Mazlan. It was at the circuit that Mazlan, the 2001 FIM Asia Road Racing champion, won the season’s opening FIM Asian Championships in the 125cc class.
Mazlan, who has never won a national title, said: “I love racing on circuits instead of on roads. I have always felt more comfortable in a proper racing environment and this helped me a lot today.
“Today is a new beginning for the team and myself. We came to produce some results and the goal has been accomplished. But it doesn’t stop here. We need to keep the momentum going if we are to put up strong challenges for the title.”
Meganathan also has reasons to smile with his new team.
“I could have done better if not for my bike overheating. But I am more than happy with the 20 points that I gained because I started seventh on the grid,” said Meganathan, who did not compete in the first round in Seremban II on April 6 and could not finish the race in Round 2 in Kangar on May 11.
In the novices’ category, favourite Mohd Syahnas Shahidan of Team Petronas Sprinta Racing, had to settle for second place after encountering mechanical problems. Norizman Ismail of Team Pro-M-Tech Dunlop won the race in 13:42.740. Syahnas was timed at 13:46.909.
In the Wira category Mohd Firdaus was a runaway winner on his Yamaha in the five-lap race. He clocked 10:49.807 for his second win of the season and his first on a circuit.
