Former TV personality Ras Adiba Radzi was the centre of attraction in the 800m racing wheelchair (three wheels) event in the Selangor Open athletics championship at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
The 35-year-old, who was the only female among the seven handicap athletes in the race, finished last. It was Ras' third race in this event since she came down with a spine injury. Her first race was in Kota Baru two months ago and her second was in Putra Jaya last month.
Ras, a former TV3 newsreader, is paralysed from the waist down since last year. She was initially admitted to the Pantai Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur but on July 22 last year, she flew to Sydney where she underwent corrective surgery.
Despite being confined to a wheelchair Ras is determined to create a record by travelling on a wheelchair from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru on Aug 1. She is expected to finish the 420km route in 14 days.
Ras also hopes to qualify for the Special Olympics for handicap athletes in Athens next year. - STARpic by S.S. Kanesan
