KANGAR: A dramatic match coupled by a blackout ended with Perlis handing reigning Premier I champions Perak a 2-0 mauling at the Utama Stadium in Kangar last night.
The drama came in the 69th minute when Perlis skipper Mohd Kiaronnisam Shahabuddin and Perak striker Khalid Jamlus was sent off for an off-the-ball scuffle in the 69th minute.
And then came the blackout in the 76th minute which delayed the match for 25 minutes.
Newly acquired Sierra Leone striker Lamin Conteh Jr led the way for the Perlis with his first league goal in the 12th minute.
Energetic midfielder Tengku Hazman Hassan delivered the second blow just three minutes later.
Perak started the match without their imports Carlos Moreira and Flavio Galvao who were respectively suspended and injured.
And homesters Perlis exploited the situation early in the game with Zambian striker Phillimon Chepita coming close in the seventh minute.
He latched onto a Conteh pass and only Perak goalkeeper Mohd Hamsani Ahmad's acrobatic save stopped his point-blank shot.
Perlis, however, were not to be denied and the moment Tengku Hazman measured a perfect cross from a free kick towards the Perak goal, Conteh sneaked in to blast home goal number one in the 12th minute.
Inspired, Perlis went into attack mode and three minutes later Perak caved in again with Tengku Hazman's pile driver taking a wicked deflection before rolling into a yawning goal.
Perak, who tried to get back into the picture after the breather became over-robust. And it gave Kedah referee Ahmad Khalidi Supian a tough time as he did not bring the culprits to book and almost lost control of the game.
When he finally stood his ground in the 69th minute, Kaironnisam and Khalid was showed the red card.
Then the stadium plunged into darkness when the four floodlights went out.
When play resumed 25 minutes later, Perak could not get back into the game as Perlis held on to take maximum points.
With Kedah beating Malacca 6-0 in Alor Star, Perak were knocked off the top of the table, a position they held since midweek.
