Montoya trades car with Gordon

INDIANAPOLIS: American Jeff Gordon couldn't contain himself after taking what he considered the ride of a lifetime.

The four-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion had just completed eight laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in Juan Montoya's Williams BMW Formula One car on Wednesday.

When he pulled onto pit lane, Gordon let out a “Yee, Ha” so loud you could hear it from under his helmet.

While Gordon got to experience the cutting edge of racing technology in the F1 car, Montoya wrestled Gordon's Chevrolet Monte Carlo at speed.

BMW Williams Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya climbs out of US Driver Jeff Gordon's MSACAR Chevrolet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The two drivers swapped cars as part of a demonstration for the upcoming United States Grand Prix.

The two racing stars loved every moment of the exhibition that was billed as “Tradin’ Paint”.

Montoya had fun driving Gordon's much heavier, and slower, Winston Cup car around the road course and said it was still a powerful and fast machine.

“I was pretty amazed with that,” Montoya said. “I went out and the only thing that really you got to learn is how far you can brake and how deep, how long you can stay on the brakes.”

Said Gordon, “To get the opportunity here today to do this fulfills really every desire and dream that I had,” Gordon said.

Montoya said the F1 car can handle the turns of the IMS road course with the accelerator to the floor, but that can't be done in a stock car.

In the stock car, Gordon's best time was 1:38.8 and Montoya's was 1:39.9. In the Formula One car, Montoya's best time was 1:15.2 and Gordon's was 1:16.5. – AFP
