BATU KAWAN: Chow Chee Weng scored three minutes into injury time to give Penang a 3-2 win and save them the blushes against a 10-man Malacca Telekom at the State Stadium here last night.
Penang, who had conceded a 93rd minute goal to lose 0-1 to Kedah in Alor Star last week, saw the pendulum swing to their side this time.
Until then, Ghanaian striker Isaac Kuffour seemed to have done enough for Malacca Telekom as he struck twice to bring them back from a two-goal deficit to level the tie at 2-2.
Penang's S. Nathakumar first missed a penalty in the 37th minute before the Panthers took the lead through Hasmawi Hassan in the 30th minute. R. Suresh Kumar extended the lead two minutes later.
The islanders then fell apart.
Penang allowed Malacca Telekom to creep back into the game by conceding a soft goal in the 37th minute. Then, they needlessly lost possession to allow Kuffour to strike again.
Hasmawi opened the scoring when he latched onto a Kok Heng through ball to beat the offside trap and round Mohamed Kamarulzaman .
Kok Heng had to be stretchered out but got back on the pitch two minutes later to set up the second goal.
His defence splitting pass found Suresh galloping clear towards goal and rifling the ball home.
Telekom reduced the deficit in the 37th minute when Kuffour found himself with space in the box to unleash a shot at goal. Penang goalkeeper Kamarulzaman Hassan let it spill and the lurking Ghanaian knocked home the rebound.
Telekom came back stronger in the second half and took just seven minutes to draw level.
Suresh lost possession, and Imran Ahmad floated in a perfect cross for Kuffour to plant home a firm header.
Malacca Telekom's Faizal Esahar received his marching orders for a second bookable offence eight minutes from the end.
And then came the Chee Weng show. He snapped onto a loose ball from a corner to boot the ball in.
