KUALA LUMPUR: Paddler Kueh Wan May rose to the occasion twice to help Sarawak defend their overall champions title in the national schools (MSSM) table tennis competition in Miri, Sarawak on Thursday.
She won the Girl's Under-12 final, defeating Johor's Tan Boo Yi 3-1in the finals and then partnered Wendy Lau to beat Boon Yi-Eva Teh with a hard-fought 3-2 win in the doubles to deliver two of Sarawak's five-gold medals in the five-day competition.
Sarawak also won the Boy's Under-12 title through Mattues s/o Aloysius and Boy's Under-18 crown through Kho Mao Sheng. The other gold medal came through the boy's Under-12 team.
However, the biggest upset of the tournament was created by Malacca's San Xiao Jun in the Girl's Under-18. The back-up player turned the tables on Sabah's Chiu Soo Jin, a member of the World Championships squad, with a convincing 4-2 win.
While topped the tables with a total five gold, three silver and five bronze medals. Penang came in second with a 2-1-0 haul and thanks to San Xiao, Malacca came in third with two gold medals.
She also steered the Malacca team to victory in the Under-18 team event.
