BELGRADE: Ten policemen and a television reporter were injured when fans rioted after a Serbia and Montenegro first division match on Saturday, the Beta news agency reported.

Quoting police sources, the Belgrade-based agency said the officers had been hurt in a clash with Rad Belgrade fans, who started a riot after seeing their team relegated to the second division.

It said a local television reporter sustained a slight arm injury from a gunshot ricochet.

Around 350 hard core Rad fans, known as the “United Force”, threw flares and rocks at police and tried to invade the pitch to attack the visiting players after the final whistle.

Beta said the police were forced to fire gunshots into the air to protect themselves and several of their vehicles were badly damaged in a full-scale clash with the fans which subsequently erupted outside the stadium.

It quoted police sources as saying that 17 fans had been detained so far.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw and the result relegated Rad to the second division on the final day of the season. – Reuters
