PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) have received a big boost to their campaign in the Premier II football competition with a whopping RM1 million sponsorship from a private company.
Seni Jaya Corporation Bhd, an outdoor advertising company listed on the KLSE, made a pledge yesterday to sponsor the team RM200,000 annually for the next five years.
Besides presenting a cheque for RM200,000, the company’s director, Tengku Datuk Sulaiman Jalil Shah, also presented keys to two Proton Waja cars to the MPPJ president, Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar.
MPPJ team manager Redzuan Sintol said that with the sponsorship by Seni Jaya, the team now had a total of RM7 million to run the team over the next five years.
“We have five-year deals with two other main sponsors – Kurnia and Urusan Pearl and Dean (UPD). Kurnia give us RM600,000 a year while UPD give us RM200,000 annualy as well,” said Redzuan.
“We also have other sponsors and we are looking forward to getting more companies to back us. We are financially a very stable club in the M-League.”
Redzuan added that the sponsorship from Seni Jaya had boosted their confidence of putting up a better show in Premier II.
“We hope to finish among the top four to qualify for the playoff for places in the Super League, which will be introduced next year,” said Redzuan.
“Last year, we finished third and missed being promoted to Premier I. But this year, we will go all out to achieve our target.”
MPPJ are now in fifth spot in the 12-team Premier II with 20 points from 12 matches – six wins, two draws and four defeats.
They have scored 27 goals and conceded 22.
Redzuan added that they would use the money to hire a third foreign player for their campaign in the M-League next year.
“Teams are allowed to field three foreign players next year. A third player will definitely strengthen our side to match the top teams in the M-League,” he said.
MPPJ now have two Argentines in their ranks – former Boca Junior players Bruno Sebastian Martelotto and Juan Manuel Arostegui.
Arostegui has scored 15 goals thus far in Premier II this season and is the joint leading scorer with Azman Andan of Negri Sembilan.
Redzuan added that they were satisfied with the performances of the two Argentines.
He also said that the Argentine duo would get to use the two Waja cars, which Seni Jaya presented to MPPJ yesterday.
Arostegui and Martelotto, who also attended the presentation ceremony, thanked MPPJ for letting them use the cars.
Arostegui said that the Seni Jaya sponsorship would spur him and Martelotto to help MPPJ make the grade.
