KUALA LUMPUR: This years edition of the Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race will be flagged off at 10am on Aug 30 instead of its traditional start at midnight.
The press liaison officer of the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), Azhar Ghazali, said that the 12-hour race would finish at 10pm the same day instead of noon on Merdeka Day.
It will be a different kind of challenge for the drivers this year. It will also be a different kind of Merdeka Day celebration this time around, he said yesterday.
He said that the race would be more challenging as the drivers also had to battle the heat and humidity.
The deadline for registration of entries is Aug 16.
Only 77 cars will be allowed to start the race, divided into four classes based on engine capacity. Each team will have three drivers.
Class O is for production sports or saloon cars with free modification while Class A is for production cars of 1,901cc and above.
Production saloon cars of between 1,601cc and 1,890cc will be grouped under Class B while Class C will be opened to production saloon cars with engine capacity between 1,550cc and 1,600cc.
We are happy to note that there have been many enquiries on the event and we anticipate another overwhelming response from both local and foreign teams, said Azhar.
The SIC would like to advise all interested parties to submit their registration early.
The entry fee is RM3,500 for Class A and O, RM3,000 for Class B and RM2,500 for Class C.
Qualifying will be held in the afternoon of Aug 29.
Azhar also said that they were working out a fully-packed programme of entertainment.
Aug 30 is a Saturday and we want to take full advantage of the long weekend to attract fans from other states to enjoy the event, added Azhar.
