KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have been drawn in the “Group of Death” after being placed with tough customers Thailand, Iraq, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Group D of the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) Futsal championships scheduled to be held in Japan from July 27 to Aug 5.
The Thais are expected to be the favourites based on their third-place finish last year, when they upset South Korea. However, they will find it tough with Iraq and Uzbekistan, both quarter-finalists at the last championship, while Turkmenistan will only make their debut in the tournament.
Four-time Asian champions Iran were handed an easy passage into the quarter-finals with Kyrgyzstan, China and Lebanon for company in Group C.
The Malaysians, being trained by Brazilian Silvio Sergio Machada are currently preparing for the KL World 5's Futsal tournament scheduled at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil from June 3 to 8.

Group B: South Korea, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Brunei
Group C: Iran, Kyrgyzstan, China, Lebanon
Group D: Thailand, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Malaysia
