KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, who have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Junior Fed Cup Asia-Ocenia regional qualifying zone for the first time, will face fourth seed Thailand at the National Tennis Sports Complex in Jalan Duta today.
However, Malaysia will face an uphill task against Thailand, who won all their Group Two matches.
Thailand, who beat Indonesia 2-1 and outplayed Hong Kong 3-0 in the first two matches, beat South Korea 2-1 yesterday.
Nudnida Luangnam gave them the first point by beating Lee Ye-ra 6-3, 7-5 in the first singles. Pichittra Thongdach had no problem defeating Kim Hae-sung 6-2, 6-2 to deliver the winning point in the second singles.
The Thai pair of Varanya Vijuksanaboon-Nudnida, however, lost 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 to Ye-ra-Byun Hye-mi in the doubles.
In the other quarter-finals, top seeds Taiwan, who topped Group One, will face New Zealand; Indonesia will take on Japan; and second seeds India, who topped Group Three, will face third seeds South Korea.
Group One: Taiwan bt Philippines 3-0 (Hwang I-hsuan bt Catherine Flores 6-0, 6-1; Hsu Wen-hsin bt Arra Micayabas 6-2, 7-5; Hsu Wen-hsin-Lin Yu-ting bt Catherine-Arra 6-1, 6-1).
Group Two: Thailand bt South Korea 2-1 (Nudnida Luangnam bt Lee Ye-ra 6-3, 7-5; Pichittra Thongdach bt Kim Hae-sung 6-2, 6-2; Varanya Vijuksanaboon-Nudnida lost to Ye-ra-Byun Hye-mi 6-3, 2-6, 1-6).
Indonesia bt Hong Kong 3-0 (Lavinia Tananta bt Anthea Look 1-6, 6-0, 6-1; Ayu Fani Damanyanti bt Kathy Lo Yee Ting 6-1, 6-0; Ayu Fani-Febri Joana Andriani bt Kathy-Tsz Man Melda Tsang 6-2, 6-1).
Group three: India bt Japan 2-1 (Sanaa Bhambri bt Megumi Fukui 7-5, 6-2; Tara Iyer bt Mari Tanaka 2-6, 6-2, 6-2; Kartiki Bhat-Sanaa lost to Mari-Megumi 7-5, 6-7 (1), 1-6).
