ZURICH: FIFA agreed to expand the 2006 World Cup in Germany to an unprecedented 36 teams following a heated seven-hour meeting of their executive committee on Saturday.
But Sepp Blatter, president of world football’s governing body, said the expanded format would not be ratified until they agreed on a format that avoided fixture problems and maintained the event’s sporting credibility.
