PETALING JAYA: The four national athletes who have been training in Germany for more than a month now, will take part in two high level competition there next month.
The four - Malik Tobias (decathlon), Mohamed Zaiful Zainal Abidin (400m), Moh Siew Wei (100m hurdles) and Noraseela Khalid (400m hurdles) - will compete in their first German circuit meet in Dessau on May 29.
Some of the top European athletes are expected to compete in this meet although no names have yet been confirmed.
The Malaysian quartet are also expected to take part in another German circuit meet on May 31 in Zeuleuroda.
German Jorg Teichmann, a physiotherapist with the National Sports Council (NSC), contacted the athletes in Germany and said the four were training well and would see action next month.
“Zaiful, Siew Wei and Noraseela are training under track coach Avras Jonschanska and he told me the three are coping well.
“Jonschanska is emphasising more on their technique and speed. He is expecting the three to do well in Dessau.
“It's a high level competition and most of the top European athletes will be taking part in the one-day circuit,'' said Teichmann, who is also the personal coach of national high jumper Loo Kum Zee.
Zaiful, Noraseela and Siew Wei are based at the Olympic training centre in Leipzig while Malik is based at the Halle Athletics Club under the guidance of Wolfgang Kuehne.
Malik holds the decathlon record of 6,989 points. Zaiful has a time of 46.41 for the 400m; Siew Wei has clocked 13.39 for the 100m hurdles and Noraseela has done 58.70 in the 400m hurdles.
Although the training stint is for six months, Noraseela, who is majoring in human development at the Universiti Putra of Malaysia (UPM) will return in July to finish her final semester.
The others will return in September for the Malaysian Open and also the ATF meet in Manila.
