KUALA LUMPUR: More than RM15mil has been awarded to outstanding national athletes under the National Sports Council’s Incentives Scheme introduced by the Youth and Sports Ministry in 1986.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said that under the scheme, athletes who performed well at the SEA Games, Asiad, Commonwealth Games and Olympics were given cash rewards.
“These rewards will spur them to achieve more success at the highest level apart from assisting their future,” he said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk Arzmi Abdul Hamid at the Dewan Negara yesterday.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said that nearly all the firearms used in armed robberies were smuggled from neighbouring countries.
He told Senator Datuk Long Jidin that studies by the police revealed that robbers did not use stolen firearms or those that had been reported missing.
On Tuesday night, outgoing Dewan Negara President Tan Sri Michael Chen said the Senators’ Club should play an active role to promote the importance of the Dewan Negara in nation-building,
Besides being disciplined, senators must work hard to transform the Senate into a powerhouse for the public to seek solutions for their problems, he said.
“I will not be able to assist you all to achieve this noble goal as my term of office has ended, but I’m confident all of you can do it,” he said. – Bernama
