JOHANNESBURG: Former South Africa international Phumlani Mkhize shot himself in the leg earlier this week in an accident with a firearm at his home, club officials said on Thursday.
The striker, who earned a single cap for his country in 2000, will be charged with indiscipline by his Johannesburg club Kaizer Chiefs after the incident.
Officials said he had apparently been playing with the weapon when a shot went off and hit him in the leg.
“We are sorry about what happened to the player but he is setting a bad precedent,” said team manager Bobby Motaung. “The player is employed to play football and he must explain circumstances surrounding this incident.”
Mkhize, who has failed to hold down a regular place in the team, will be out for the rest of the season. – Reuters
