LONDON COLNEY (England): Arsenal will take on Sheffield United in today’s FA Cup semi-final without injured French winger Robert Pires, manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday.

Pires, who missed last week’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa with an ankle injury, should be the only absentee for the holders when they take on their First Division opponents at Old Trafford.

“Robert will not play on Sunday,” Wenger told reporters at the team’s training ground.

Pires is also a doubt for next Wednesday’s much-awaited league clash at Highbury with Manchester United, who are level on 67 points with Wenger’s leaders and trail only on goal difference.

“He has a chance,” Wenger said of his fellow Frenchman. “It depends how he comes through tomorrow and Sunday in training.”

Goalkeeper David Seaman, set for the 1,000th game of his career, and defender Martin Keown, who both missed the Villa game with hamstring injuries, along with Dutch utility player Giovanni van Bronckhorst (ankle), are fit.

There should be a start for England leftback Ashley Cole, a late substitute against Villa in his first appearance since February following a hernia operation. – Reuters
