PETALING JAYA: The national divers will not get to compete in the American and Canadian legs of the FINA Grand Prix circuit next month because of the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia's (Asum) secretary, Edwin Chong, said that the divers they intended to send to the two legs were Asian Games bronze medallists Leong Mun Yee, Rossharisham Roslan, Low Lap Bun and Noraznizal Najib.

“Under the current situation, it is best that they not compete in the Canadian leg (in Victoria from May 2-4) and the US leg (in Woodlands from May 8-11),” said Edwin.

The decision to skip the two legs means that the divers will not be able to make the cut for the Super Finals in Mexico City in June. The Finals feature the top 24 divers and they have to compete in at least four of the nine-leg circuit.

The circuit has gone five legs and the Malaysian quartet have only competed in one of them – the second leg in Zhuhai in February. After US and Canada, the remaining two legs will be held in Mexico and Italy.

The competition in Zhuhai marked the first time that Malaysian divers competed in the circuit.

Noraznizal-Lap Bun were placed last in an eight-pair men's 10m synchronized final while Mun Yee got among the 16 for the semi-finals of the women's three-metre springboard competition.
