HARARE: Zimbabwean police officers acted negligently when they fired teargas at football fans on terraces provoking a stampede which left 13 people dead at an international match here in July 2000, a court ruled on Friday.
Magistrate Faith Musinga made the ruling after an inquest hearing which had opened last November into the tragedy at the Zimbabwe vs South Africa international, state radio reported.
She ordered that a probe into the tragedy and prosecution of the officers responsible should start within the next eight weeks.
Police fired teargas at spectators sitting on terraces at Harare's Chinese-built National Sports Stadium after some of them hurled bottles at players.
Many were trampled upon as people fled from the tear smoke. AFP
