WARSAW: One person died and several others were wounded on Sunday in violent clashes between rival gangs of football supporters in the southwestern city of Wroclaw.
Police officers were forced to intervene when rival fans began attacking each other with axes and knives during the league match between Slask Wroclaw and Arka Gdynia, a police spokesman told the PAP news agency.
The police were then turned on by the crowd and pelted with stones, but managed to arrest 120 people.
The dead man, who was not named, died in hospital. The cause of his death was not known.
Three other supporters were forced to remain in hospital because of the extent of their injuries. AFP
