PETALING JAYA: Six newcomers, including four players from the national Under-21 football squad, have been called up to join the 25-member pre-Olympic (Under-22) side for the second phase of centralised training at the Wisma FAM from Tuesday.
The four from the national Under-21 squad are striker R. Surendran and defenders Mat Saiful Mohamed, Yusri Dermaraju and M. Ravinthiran.
They earned the call-up following good performances in the Youth International Tournament earlier this month in which Malaysia lost 0-3 and 0-2 to national Under-20 sides of Brazil and South Korea respectively.
The newcomers to the are defender P. Gunalan of Selangor and striker Azralan Azmi.
Four other players from the Under-21 squad, who missed the first phase of training, are also named by coach Alan Harris yesterday. They are Mohamed Fadzli Shaari, Rudie Ramli, Tengku Elias Tengku Ibrahim and Mohamed Norisham Hassan.
Malaysia open their pre-Olympic campaign in the second round against the winners of the tie between Turkmenistan and India. The first-leg will be played in Kuala Lumpur on May 3 and the return match is on June 7.
National team manager Datuk Ibrahim Saad said that two friendly matches in Bangkok in mid-April and a home game against Jordan were planned.
