DALLAS: Malaysia's Nicol David and Sharon Wee failed to make it to the main draw of the Texas Open squash championships here on Wednesday.

In the second round of the qualifying tournament, the 19-year-old Nicol put up a gallant fight but was not good enough as she was beaten 5-9, 9-2, 5-9, 2-9 by Shelley Kitchen of New Zealand.

Sharon, meanwhile, went down tamely 1-9, 4-9, 0-9 to Vicky Botwright of England.

Hong Kong's Rebecca Chiu, who beat Nicol to the gold medal in the Busan Asian Games last October, advanced to the main draw with a hard-fought 6-9, 9-3, 9-6, 6-9, 9-2 victory over Scotland's Pamela Nimmo.

But Rebecca, who is ranked 25th in the world, is unlikely to advance further.

She will be up against world number five Rachael Grinham of Australia in the first round of the tournament proper.
