DALLAS: Malaysia's Nicol David, who made a return to the Women International Squash Players Association (WISPA) circuit last week, is only one match away of qualifying for the main draw of the Texas Open.
The 19-year-old Nicol, who lost in the quarter-finals of the Bright Lights Open in Las Vegas last week, defeated Latasha Khan of United States 10-8, 9-7, 5-9, 9-5 in the first round of the qualifying tournament on Tuesday.
Nicol, who took a five-month break after failing to retain the Asian Games title in Busan last October, will play against Shelly Kitchen of New Zealand for a place in the main draw.
Kitchen outplayed Kate Allison of England 9-1, 10-9, 9-1.
Another Malaysia, Sharon Wee, who is ranked 24th in the world, also won her first-round qualifier. She beat Egyptian Engy Kheirallah 4-9, 9-2, 9-2, 7-9, 9-4.
Sharon, who won the Japan Open last year, will play against Vicky Botwright of England for a place in the main draw.
