RIO DE JANEIRO: A leading member of a Flamengo supporters club has been jailed for 22 years for shooting at fans of rivals Vasco da Gama, public prosecutors said.
Marcio Alexandre de Silos Melo, vice-president of the Torcida Jovem do Flamengo (Young Supporters of Flamengo), was found guilty of attempting to kill two Vasco supporters, the Rio de Janeiro state government's public prosecutor's office said in a statement yesterday.
Melo was said to have waited outside Vasco da Gama's headquarters for a bus carrying the rival supporters to arrive back from an away game in May 1997.
He then fired at least 10 shots at the supporters, injuring two – including one who has suffered permanent knee damage.
Flamengo's supporters are among the most notorious in Brazil. – Reuters
