IBF reverts to traditional scoring system for all events

PETALING JAYA: The badminton scoring system has reverted to its traditional format for all events.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) extraordinary general meeting (EGM) last Sunday voted to discard the 11x3 format for the women's and mixed doubles and both the events would revert to the 15x3 format.

The IBF had experimented with a 7x5 scoring format for a year but during the Thomas Cup Finals in Guangzhou last May, they decided to revert to the traditional format of 15x3 for the men's singles and doubles and 11x3 for the women's singles.

However, the doubles for women and mixed were shortened to 11x3.

The Badminton Association of England initiated a protest against the new scoring system, especially for the women's doubles and mixed doubles. They proposed a 9x5 format for all events but failed to get the majority votes at the EGM.

The traditional scoring format for all events takes effect from April 15.
