MERCEDES-Benz will be introducing a new model as the safety car for the Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix this weekend.

The new CLK 55 AMG coupe will be used as the safety car and are driven by former racing driver Bernd Maylander. 

Mercedes-Benz has been the official supplier of the safety car to Formula One races since 1997. 

Previous models seen in action were the CLK 55 AMG,the CL 55 AMG and the SL55 AMG.An F1 safety car has to fulfil stringent requirements. 

The car may look similar to the road version but it is fitted with a vast array of extra equipment, including sophisticated radio systems and TV cameras. 

The oldest and the youngest 

FRENCHMAN Philippe Etancelin’s record is likely to stand for eternity. At the age of 53 years, he became the oldest driver to score points in the F1 race, finishing fifth twice in the Italian and French GPs held in 1950. 

The youngest driver to win points in the Formula One race is Jenson Button. 

Button was 20 years, two months and seven days old when he finished fourth to win three points in the German Grand Prix in 2000. 

Emerson Fittipaldi from Brazil is the youngest driver to become a F1 champion, achieving the feat in 1972 at the age of 25 years, eight months and 29 days. 

When Michael Schumacher won the first of his five world titles to come in 1994, he was 25 years, 10 months and 10 days old. 

The oldest world champion in history is Juan Manuel Fangio, who took the 1957 world title at the age of 46, one month and 11 days old. 

Pneumonia scare  

FRENCH sports daily L’Equipe are staying away from Malaysia fearing “medical risks” attached to the outbreak of a mysterious form of pneumonia in Asia. 

The travel ban on their reporters is believed to break the paper's tradition stretching back half a century of being represented at every Grand Prix since F1's inception in 1953. 

Car No 0 for duo 

CAR number 0 has only been used by two drivers in F1 history -Jody Scheckter in Canada and USA 1973 and by Damon Hill throughout 1993 and 1994.
