PETALING JAYA: Debutants Malacca and Malaysian Malays are the surprise quarter-finalists in the third national futsal (five-a-side) tournament, which is being played at the TLDM Sports Complex in Lumut.
Malacca beat the odds to top Group A with maximum nine points – beating last year's runners-up Pahang 8-5, Kedah 6-2 and Perak 9-4. Pahang beat Kedah 12-1 in the last match in the group yesterday to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Malaysian Malays had to fight tooth and nail against Armed Forces before pulling off a narrow 5-3 win to pip the home team to the runners-up spot in Group C.
Malaysian Malays had earlier defeated Teachers Training Colleges B (6-1) and lost to Kuala Lumpur (8-9). KL topped the group.
Perlis and Teachers Training Colleges (TTC) A advanced from Group B. Perlis topped the group with nine points after they defeated TTC A 5-3 in the last game.
Two-time champions Maksak (Government Services Sports and Welfare Council) as expected cruised into the quarter-finals from Group D with an easy 8-2 win over Penang yesterday.
The defending champions scored full marks in their group matches. They also defeated Johor (3-1) and Klang Valley Selection (6-2). Johor made the cut to the quarter-finals, holding Klang Valley Selection to a 4-4 draw
In the quarter-finals today, Maksak will play against TTC A (11.15am). The other match-ups are: Malacca vs Malaysian Malays (7.30am); KL vs Pahang (8.45am); and Perlis vs Johor (10am).
Group A: Pahang 12 Kedah 1; Malacca 9 Perak 4.
Group B: N. Sembilan 2 Masum 4; Perlis 5 TTC A 3.
Group C: K. Lumpur 5 TTC B 2; Armed Forces 3 Malaysian Malays 5.
Group D: Maksak 8 Penang 2; Johor 4 Klang Valley 4.
